Management Plan

In April 1987, ICOMOS, one of Unesco’s advisory boards, proposed that the monumental complex of Piazza dei Miracoli should be added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Centres, as it fulfilled its criteria I , II , IV and VI .

Today, UNESCO, in a report on the state of preservation of the national cultural heritage, submitted to the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture, requests a management system for each site, so as to make sure that the huge heritage that we are now called to guard will be handed down to the future generations.

Pursuant to Act no 77 dated February 20th 2006, "Specific measures for the protection and use of sites of cultural, natural and environmental interest included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Centres", and because of the need to draw up a Management Plan for the UNESCO site of  'Piazza del Duomo di Pisa', on July 27th 2007 the Opera della Primaziale Pisana signed a memorandum of understanding with the parties that contribute to the management of the monumental area.

This document outlines and coordinates all the current and future work for the protection of such site, in a skilful balance between preservation and promotion, so as to steer the choices of urban and economic planning, keeping in mind its distinctive nature as a holy place.

The Opera della Primaziale Pisana took part in the III National Conference of Italian UNESCO World Heritage Centres (Turin, 2005) and in the IV Conference (Siracusa, 2006), where they showed how sensitive they are to technical-scientific criteria and museum standards (art. 150 paragraph 6 Legislative Decree no 112/98), completely subscribing to ICOM’s definition of a museum: "A permanent non-profit institution, serving society and its development, open to the public, researching the material evidence of man and man’s environment, collecting, preserving and transmitting such evidence and above all exhibiting such evidence for study, education and entertainment".
