This year, again, from June 17th to September 4th, Opera della Primaziale Pisana re-launches the usual Piazza sotto la Luna, the night openings of the city’s monuments. But there will be something new this year: after the successful experiment of last April in partnership with Pisatour Associazione Guide Turistiche and Cooperativa Impegno e Futuro, this summer the Monumental Cemetery will appear in an unprecedented guise, as a veritable artistic and cultural ‘workshop’, open to visitors of all ages.
So the special opening of the Leaning Tower until 11.00 pm will be matched by the opening of the Monumental Cemetery of Pisa, where specialist guides will take Italian and foreign visitors on a tour that will disclose the history of the building and the impressive cycle of Medieval frescoes it contains.
The long, delicate restoration of its painted surfaces will be described to visitors by the authors of such exemplary restoration, the restorers of Opera Primaziale Pisana, who have already put back on the walls of the building many of the scenes that have been recovered after the disastrous fire of 1944.
And what about the younger ones? There will be an educational workshop in the adjoining Hall of Frescoes, under the careful supervision of skilled staff who will entertain children in interactive games, making them create a small ‘art gallery’, while their parents finish their tour and then return to look at the ‘masterpieces’ of these budding artists.
